IMPORTANT NOTICE re BOM CHALLENGES ...

I am becoming such a fundi with BLOGGER that I decided to hyperlink each of my BOM Challenges on my sidebar to the actual page where the info is ... in other words, if you click on say Challenge No. 4 on my sidebar you will be re-directed to the full text challenge ... cool, huh??? No more wading through post after post to find previous challenges ....

Love,

BOM CHALLENGE No. 14 ...

I decided to add this topic as I have seen it on loads of blogs and it usually makes for some pretty interesting reading - it sure has done its' rounds of the cyberworld umpteen times ... guaranteed you have come across a list of this kind whilst browsing or reading your favourite blogs .... So here it is ...

{101} Random facts about me ...
These facts can be interesting, silly, funny, peculiar or downright boring - I just want you to tell us some little known facts about you ie. the stuff that makes you the individual you are ...

You may not wish to record {101} facts but I would encourage you to put down as much info as possible ...

TIP ... if you stick a note on the fridge door and another in your handbag, you can jot these facts down as they occur to you and then complete your LO once you have reached the number you wish to record. Trust me, once you start recording these little titbits of information, you may have to limit yourself to only {101} ... tee hee ...

Take a look at this blog and you will see Tracy K's random facts - I reckon hers are as honest and as real as I've seen ... funny too ...

This Challenge is due by 6th February 2009 ...

Enjoy girls!!! I am sure that a number of these facts will make us giggle or just plain LAUGH OUT LOUD .... this is good ....

Love,

FREE QUEEN & CO. STASH

Queen & Co has some pretty amazing new product - go and take a look here and you could win some free stash ...

RESUME of a not-so-DESPERATE HOUSEWIFE ...

This is my latest submission to Journaling Junkie. Go along and do the challenge - loads of fun and a freebie too ...

Maid (“We can’t both look good, it’s either me or the house”)

This is my least favourite job of all! I have a maid, Phyllis, who comes in twice a week to mop, dust, iron and attend to the heavier cleaning – otherwise I pretty much keep the house clean and tidy on a daily basis. I don’t enjoy washing pots and I despise mopping and sweeping floors and cleaning bathrooms!! In fact, I pretty much don’t like the job of maid at all …

Family StoryTeller - This is my favourite job

I get to document our lives and to tell the stories that may be forgotten along the way. I keep the memories alive and I take the photographs. I put the pictures that make us smile on the walls. I remind my family of the good days on not so good days. I am leaving a legacy of love behind for my boys and for our future generations … what an awesome role I play in this Family…

Detective

I must be an undercover (so deep not even I know who I am) FBI Agent sent into middle-class South Africa to infiltrate the operation known as “TWO SOCKS GO INTO THE MACHINE BUT ONLY ONE COMES OUT”???? What???? I only wash what they put into the laundry basket – I’m just a housewife for goodness sake … call in the SWAT Team … Put out an APB on the missing socks … sigh … Why do my boys assume that I know where everything that goes missing lands up? I don’t wear their slops, use their Games Chargers and misplace their car keys, cellphones or T-Shirts – why am I the Finder of all that goes missing??? I’m tired of playing Detective – pleeeeease give this job to somebody else …

Cheerleader (“Little words of kindness, little acts of love”)

I am our official “let me make you feel better” Family Cheerleader. Whenever my boys are sad, sick, tired, stressed or just plain otherwise, I am the one who knows exactly what to say to make everything better. I am their biggest Champion – I attend every game and every function – I pick up the pieces when things go wrong and I cheer them on when all is well … I am proud of my boys and I love this job because they are my Cheerleaders too …

Chef (“I only have a kitchen because it came with the house”)

I enjoy cooking for a dinner party or special occasion – actually I think I enjoy the organising and decorating more than I do the cooking … tee hee – but I cannot bear everyday cooking. Not only is it a mission to decide WHAT to cook everyday but my boys are soooo fussy – no veggies and nothing that looks or tastes even remotely healthy! Perhaps it’s just the thought of all the cleaning up afterwards … sigh … please send me a chef – PRONTO!!!

Personal Shopper

I am not quite sure how I feel about this role in my family … Shopping for everyday stuff like food and cleaning materials and … well, stuff, is just plain boring and quite frankly a waste of my time but I do it because I love them. Of course, this is not to say that I do not enjoy retail therapy at all but only when I get to buy some seriously delicious item for my home or my scrapping stash … tee hee … or even an item of clothing that I know would look so good on one of my boys … all in all, a pretty cool job …

This was fun ...

Michelle's Creature Comforts

This is what gives Michelle comfort ...

Everything I have gives me comfort and these things also give me a lot of pleasure as I remember how I came about owning them. I feel that I am a fairly easy going person. There is nothing as such that I could not live without. If I don't have it I do without it, although I choose not to be without my lipstick and always carry one around with me. The other thing that I feel lost without, is a watch and have always worn one.
When going away, I always make sure that I have my hairdryer with me as if my hair is not dried nicely, I don't feel right.
I find it very relaxing looking at my Beatrix Potter and Swarovski crystal figurines as these bring back memories of many overseas trips or special gifts from family and friends.
I absolutely love music and dancing. My taste in music is such that if you can dance to it I enjoy it. There have been many times whilst I have been scrapping that I have stopped to have a quick dance to a song that I really enjoy. I have a mini hi-fi set in my scrap room and have a few compilations of "older" music which I sooo enjoy and listen to often. I don't dance enough and would love to take up ballroom dancing, but Dereck hates it!! If I have the house to myself, I put a selection of music in the hi-fi in the bar, turn up the sound loud and totally have a ball!!
I find a lot of comfort and pleasure in reading a good adventure book. Dereck and I have similar tastes, so we have been lucky in that department. Occasionally I will read a soppy book just because but that is not too often. I also enjoy movies as does Dereck, so we often watch movies on TV or go to the movies. Sometimes we go and watch different movies!!
I love being with people and especially my friends and family. There is something about each friend that makes them special to me. Special friends in my life at the moment are Ingrid (Gigs who I have known since 1970 and who currently lives in London and we are still in regular contact), Shelley, Desire, Rayna, Kathy and
Audrey. These friends are easy to talk to, I love being with them and I always have a great time with them.
Believe it or not, I enjoy exercising – be it walking, doing gym or currently swimming (I am training for the Midmar Mile on 7 February 2009). I get such satisfaction after my training sessions!
I love comedy and this would be one thing to really cheer me up. I have a great sense of humour and I see the funny side of other people's misfortunes – not that I would like them to happen to me!
I love making things and get great comfort in seeing the finished product. I also get great pleasure in giving things to people, especially seeing their joy and appreciation of what they have received.
Comfort foods ... well I can't say that I need a reason to eat!! But, I really do enjoy chocolate, especially with nuts in it, nougat, marzipan, lemon meringue pie and ice-cream, to name a few. I have a sweet tooth and just love food in general.
Since I started scrapping in 2002, I have got to appreciate my camera and get a lot of enjoyment in taking pictures of those special moments with friends, family and holidays.
I enjoy just sitting in my garden and watching the birds. I get huge satisfaction watching monkeys – they certainly entertain me and I am totally fascinated in watching them.
When my friends and I get together we talk about any issues or situations we may have, but I don't just phone them up to discuss matters. If I am upset, I would either go and scrap, do something on the computer or go and read a book.
I am comfortable within myself and therefore comfortable in most situations.

Thanks so much for sharing, Michelle ...

Remember that BOM Challenge No. 14 will be posted sometime tomorrow ...

A LITTLE BIT OF NOTHING ...

  • Someone is stealing my bandwidth - S-E-R-I-O-U-S - it's true - how could I have used nearly 5gigs this month??? Nonsense!!! I haven't downloaded much - for real, people - die you dog-who-steals-bandwidth!!!! Had to fork out over R250 for 4 extra gigs - sucks!!!

I HAVE {FINALLY} FIGURED IT OUT ...

Yup!!! It's easy really when you know how ... after all, "when you know better you can do better" (thanks, Maya Angelou) ...

I figured out that Kids have it all mapped out perfectly ...

keep it simple and enjoy the little things
(Could it be any easier than this?)

(I found the following suggestions on a website somewhere out there in Cyberspace (I cannot remember who I have to give the credit to so I thank you in anticipation of coming across your site again ...)

Do a cartwheel.
Sing into your hairbrush.
Walk barefoot in wet grass.
Play a song you like really loud, over and over.
Dot all your “i”’s with smiley faces.
Read the funnies. Throw the rest of the paper away.
Dunk your cookies.
Play a game where you make up the rules as you go along.
Step carefully over sidewalk cracks.
Change into some play clothes.
Try to get someone to trade you a better sandwich.
Eat ice cream for breakfast.
Kiss a frog, just in case.
Blow the wrapper off a straw.
Have someone read you a story.
Find some pretty stones and save them.
Wear your favorite shirt with you favorite pants even if they don’t match.
Take a running jump over a big puddle.
Get someone to buy you something you really don’t need.
Hide your vegetables under your napkin.
Stay up past your bedtime.
Eat dessert first.
Fuss a little, then take a nap.
Wear red gym shoes.
Put way too much sugar on your cereal.
Make cool screeching noises every time you turn a corner.
Giggle a lot for no reason.
Give yourself a gold star for everything you do today.

Give it a try ...

MARA brings us CHALLENGES 3 and 4 ...

I am delighted with Mara's progress in keeping up with these Challenges and I want her to know that I love how she always journals from the heart ... Thank you, Mara ...

Here is Challenge No. 3 ...

I made a single page layout - no photos (I have no photos of myself prior to my 18th year)

The title is frozen in time, and on the right hand side I used stickers to put my birthdate. The enveope contains a letter to myself - one that I wrote to baby me, some inspiration and motivation for a very difficult childhood life. But then again I wouldn't want to change a thing in my past -it made me who I am today. I will not be posting the letter contents as it is very very personal.

And this is Challenge No. 4 ...

Again as I have no photos, I used what I have. And that is my post prized possessions. They proof that I did have a childhood life, and I also titled the page my most prized possession. this is a Marina du Plessis creation from her book. The owl is just so cute.

Journalling reads

Vlot. Sonder foute. Ek was graad 1 tot standerd 5 in laerskool Totius in vanderbijlpark. Ek onthou dat ek altyd bitter graag wou koor sing maar ek sing vals. Ek het elke oudisie getrou bygewoon, en elke keer was my hartjie gebreek as ek afgewys was. Ek het goed presteer op skool en was vol ambisie. Ek wou regte studeer of iets in die wetenskappe.

Nadat ouma oorlede is, het ons baie rondgetrek. Ek was in verskeie hoërskole, nl Vanderbijl Hoër, florida en koster. My beste pel was Sarie.

Sarie - my pel. my vertroueling - ek wens soms dinge kon wees soos destyds. Zelma en Martie - julle het my selfvertroue geboost. Ek onthou nog die fliek wat ons saam gaan kyk het. Mnr Roux - wat my 'n kans gegun het om matriek te kon skryf.
Dankie vir julle blywende invloed op my lewe!

BOM No. 12 from DESIRE

Yet another stunning LO from Desire ...

This is her tribute to her foster mom and dad ...

A Tribute to my Foster Mom and Dad {Roelof & Phoebe Walters}

I am the person I am today, because I have been moulded by the values and aspirations of Roelof & Phoebe from the very first day I came to be with them, way back in 1967. My Dad, in his patient and calm manner shared his appreciation of nature with me. His love for gardening, knowledge of plants and birdlife naturally rubbed off onto me.

Dad worked for an insurance company for the greater part of his business career and honesty was an important element of this kind of business, especially determining whether a claimant was being honest. Honesty was then also one of the first life lessons I learnt.

My Mom was a primary school teacher for 35+ years and emphasized the importance of learning and being diligent. She was also a very skillful seamstress who made all my clothes, even school blazers. I never wore any bought clothes until my first year at college. Unfortunately, this skill never rubbed off on me.

I was brought up very strict. No back chatting was allowed and if it did take place, my ear lob was pulled/pinched or I got a smack. I was also never allowed to call them ‘you’. I had to say ‘Mamma’ or ‘Pappa’. This obviously taught me to respect them.

Mom and Dad were not thrifty and knew how to work with money. Mom always said that she does not believe in a budget. If they could not pay cash for something, we had to go without it. They never had any accounts or bought anything on credit. This in a way is also my belief today when it comes to finances.

They were also very generous people and found joy in giving. Often old clothes, etc were sent off to charity organizations. I still today, enjoy giving rather than receiving.

Especially Mom taught me to be humble and always said that you rather be the least and keep the peace.

They always honoured their commitments i.e. a promise is a promise and one should always keep one’s word … I still try and live by this and feel disappointed if a promise made to me, is not kept.

I was never allowed to say what food I liked or disliked when visiting friends for a meal. I had to eat what was plated and were not allowed to leave the table before my plate was empty. This might sound very strict in today’s world, but it taught me to appreciate food and the privilege I had to have something to eat.

Mom and Dad were very active people with diverse interests and were never idle for one second. They also read a lot which was evident in their excellent general knowledge and sharpness of mind till the day they passed away. The saying ‘Happiness walks on busy feet’ is so true of Roelof and Phoebe, who were happy people, made the most of life and took whatever life threw at them in their stride.

Thank you Mom and Dad for everything you did and meant for me. Thank you for unselfishly giving everything you possibly could, at a very late stage in your lives, to make me who I am today. Your values and life lessons continue to live forth in me.

Thanks, Desire ... would that there were more parents in today's society who instilled such fine values in their children ...

GREEN UPDATE ...

My last update was on the 19th November way back in 2008 ... tee hee ... and since then I have pretty much kept up with most of my attempts at saving this Planet (have certainly slipped a few times but I am more conscious of what I need to be doing so I feel bad when I don't do what I should ... sigh ...).

These are the tasks that I have completed (still outstanding from last year)...

  • I smiled when I answered the phone - well, a few times anyway ...
  • I took my mom for a walk next door
  • I bought some cute 3/4 pants for exercising - surely this counts as a start to any exercise regime???

The tasks will be carried forward ...

  • I WILL start an exercise regime - slowly does it though - I wouldn't want my body to go into shock or anything ... tee hee ...
  • I will explore my neighbourhood ... going to chat to the neighbours about forming a recycling group in our area ...
  • I will write letters to my nephews and my niece who live far away from me ...

Then onto some new challenges ...

  • Speak rather than e-mail or text
  • Learn one good joke (I never remember the freaking punch lines????)
So, that's it!! Let's see what the new week (I can start mine on a Friday if I want to - it's MY week ...) brings ...

Does anybody know of any other websites that offer tips on reducing our carbon footprint?
Please leave a link in my comments ...

Have a good Fri-DAY ...

BOM CHALLENGE No. 13

CREATURE COMFORTS
This week's Book of Me challenge is to scrap all about the little comforts in your life. Tell us about the people and the things that make you feel good or comfortable. Who do you turn to when you are down and need a little TLC? (Do you conference call the girls and have a good old rant or meet over flapjacks and Cremochinos?) Tell us about your comfort foods or activities? Perhaps you have an object of sentimental value that always makes you smile? The possibilities are endless. Consider all the little things in your life that make you comfortable and commit them to a page. You will be recording an important part of your personality!

(this excerpt is taken almost {I, of course, have to add my two cents} verbatim from Angie Pedersen's Book of Me - so the credit goes to her ... thanks, Angie)

You have two weeks to complete this Challenge (due by 19th January 2009) so get your A's into G and enjoy the journey ... remember that this is your most important story yet - The Story of YOU!!!

Love,

MICHELLE'S BOM No. 12

No, Michelle is not late with her latest Challenge, I inadvertently deleted it when she sent it to me on the 1st day of 2009 - how organised is this chick???? You are my superhero for 2009, Michelle ...

This is her dedication to her mom and dad for the lessons she learnt from them ...

"My dad and mom have been a great inspiration in my life and were and still are, always very fair and treat my brothers, sister and I the same. None of us got more than the other. They are both very kind and caring people and always willing to assist others.
They are very careful with money and taught me at a young age its value and how to budget. When I received my pocket money, it had all been worked out exactly how much I needed and before I got my next month's pocket money, I had to show my dad what I had spent my money on ie I had to keep a budget. I know that my parents saved well which enabled us to go on holidays (mainly during July) and I saw a lot of South Africa as we mostly drove to wherever we were going. We often visited my cousins in East London and Port Elizabeth.
My parents encouraged us to do sport and fetched and carried when necessary. I was fortunate enough to do music (I played the piano until I was in matric and my teacher died), ballet, modern dancing, speech and drama (I won a bursary to study with Prof. Elizabeth Sneddon for a year), gymnastics, squash, tennis, badminton, athletics and swimming. My dad played a lot of tennis, so I suppose I got that love of sport from him. My brothers and sister also did music, karate, badminton and squash from what I can remember.
My mom was a Domestic Science teacher and once I started school she stopped working, so she was always home in the afternoons. My mom often baked biscuits and cakes which we loved to help with and when I got older, there were certain biscuits, coconut squares and cupcakes that I certainly enjoyed making. Whenever we needed cakes or things for a function, my mom would make meringues (this was her speciality) or other baked goodies. My mom would rather make something than go and buy it. My mom also sewed very well and made a lot of my skirts, dresses and tops and would often sit up late into the night to finish an outfit for me. I remember having to stand up on the desk (she is very short) so that she could measure the hems of my skirts properly!!
My dad is very good with doing woodwork and made a lot of the furniture in our house – all the cupboards in the kitchen and bedrooms, their bed, dressing table, my sister and my bed and chest of drawers to name a few things, as well as for other people. He was always doing something in the garage or fixing up something round the house. My dad very seldom called someone in to fix things – he got on and did them himself.
As children we knew exactly where we stood with my parents. If they said no, there was no changing that. Sometimes we could answer back to my mom, but if she said she was calling my dad, boy were we scared! A lot of pepper and sunlight soap went down my mouth!!!
Both my parents have a good sense of humour, my dad a bit more than my mom and we have had lots of laughs together. My mom has a lot of patience.
To dad and mom – thank you for all that you have done for me and for giving me the grounding to be the person that I am today."

Thanks for sharing, Michelle ...

Come on girls, let's try and catch up in this New Year - to remind you (and add a bit of positive affirmation), add this banner that I pinched from Stacy Julian to your blog ... it's so coool ...

Love,

MY MANTRA FOR 2009

I hope you will have a wonderful year, that you'll dream dangerously and outrageously, that you'll make something that didn't exist before you made it, that you will be loved and that you will be liked, and that you will have people to love and to like in return. And, most importantly (because I think there should be more kindness and more wisdom in the world right now), that you will, when you need to be, be wise, and that you will always be kind. -- Neil Gaiman
